7PLY HISTORY
History
The birth of the “7PLY PROJECT” was simultaneous with the birth of Propaganda Rollin co. in 2005! The idea was a festival that would combine all the street and skate culture elements, modified in way that would be more friendly to people that have nothing to do with the streets and would serve in giving them a more clear idea of what skateboarding is all about, and at the same time help in raising the participation in the actual sport. The name of the festival derives from the most common method of manufacturing a skateboard deck which is the gluing and pressing of seven thin maple veneers in a mold that creates the final shape of the skateboard deck.
The spine of the festival is the art show of mixed artists working on blank skateboard decks and each one of them creating a new and unique art object! The skateboard deck is used both to inspire each participating artist and express his ideas through the process of transformation that the blank deck is going through.
The 7ply project is a skateboard party with a mini ramp contest going on during both days, a special stair set up best trick contest on the last afternoon, graffiti live action, photo exhibition and many live acts and dj sets. The festival would be better described as a platform uniting all street culture lovers. It is a place where skaters, artists, musicians and groupies meet and spend together a weekend of freedom, adrenaline, innovation through creation and a really goodtime under the Greek sun.
Although we started giving out the first blank decks in May 2005 the first 7Ply project took place in Thessaloniki – Greece in February 2006. After that the base of the festival has moved to Athens and to “Technopolis” of the City of Athens which is a renovated gas factory located in the heart of the city. The years 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010 the 7Ply project has grown so much that an average of 12.000 people are attending during the two days. The 7Ply project is a free entrance festival, with the blank boards given out to the artists for free, with no entry fee required for the competing skaters and a prize purse of 5000€ for the winners!
